Brown Pelican Dive

Sanibel Island, Sanibel, Florida
February 11th, 2020
I was walking the beach at Sanibel island with my camera in hand hoping to grab some captures of the variety of birds that were populating the beach that day. The sky was heavy with clouds so there was not as much light as I would normally like, especially when taking pictures of darker colored birds like this Brown Pelican. I followed this particular pelican for a bit as he would make hard dives into the water after a meal. I was able to take this capture, just a second before he hit the water. The diffused light allowed the variety of blue colors pop that they have throughout their feathers and head. I always felt brown pelicans really show how modern day birds are distant descendants of the dinosaurs from long ago.

I am in my 50's and happily married with 5 daughters from our blended family. I became interested in photography just a few short years ago, much later in life than many but my passion is strong. I started out experimenting with scenic mountain shots, landscapes, flowers and anything nature as being outside is where I am happiest.
