Great Blue Heron Speared Fish

Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge - Lipsec, Delaware
May 25th, 2022
At Bombay, there is a drainage pipe that leads from the salt marsh of the Delaware Bay to the fresh water side of the refuge pools. Birds have learned that if they wait at the pipe on fresh water side, fish will come through with the flow of the water. I watched this Great Blue Heron for about 5 minutes when all of the sudden he went hard after a fish. This capture shows what the GBH was able to snare with his stabbing beak. Unfortunately, the fish got away.

I am in my 50's and happily married with 5 daughters from our blended family. I became interested in photography just a few short years ago, much later in life than many but my passion is strong. I started out experimenting with scenic mountain shots, landscapes, flowers and anything nature as being outside is where I am happiest.
